It’s that time of year!  Summer’s in full swing, and freshly minted college grads are enjoying their last carefree days…or starting that job search.  Remember when you graduated from undergrad or post-graduate school?  If you were like me, graduating in the go-go 90s, the world was your oyster and full of possibility. 

Fast-forward to the world that students face today.  The national unemployment rate hovers around 9% (as of May 2011 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics), and the average student is graduating with $24,000 in debt. (New York Times, October 21, 2010, Average College Debt Rose to $24,000 in 2009, by Tamar Lewin).  More if a post-graduate degree is involved. In terms of starting adult life in the still-challenging real estate job market, sounds grim, doesn’t it?
 
The realities that new grads face in the industry can be harsh.  But, there is a way that we, as leaders in real estate, can give a leg-up to the young women who want to follow in our footsteps! 
 
As CREW Denver members, we can help fund educational costs of young women through the CREW Foundation Scholarship Endowment.  The best part is, we can do it through a variety of CREW Denver activities!  This year, thanks to the generosity of CB Richard Ellis, funds received nation-wide by CREW Foundation and designated for the scholarship endowment will be matched in scholarship awards of up to $75,000.  Any donations our chapter makes will have double the impact by helping us meet our commitment and making even more funds available to scholarship recipients!
 
You can join us in raising funds by attending the CREW Denver Shaken’ & Stirred Martini Mixer on July 21, 2011.  Shake up your network, stir up your contacts – all while sipping the most-sophisticated of cocktails and raising money for a great cause.
Cocktails not your style?  How about a trip to Tuscany?  CREW Foundation is holding its “Under the Tuscan Sun Trip” raffle from now until September 14.  Tickets are $25 each, or $100 for five.  The trip includes a seven-night stay in Tuscany, wine tastings, vineyard tours and meals.  To find tickets, visit the Crew Networks site at www.crewnetwork.org under the Foundation tab.  Proceeds from the raffle support all of the CREW Foundation programs at the national level, including the scholarship fund.
 
CREW Foundation, established in 1998 as the philanthropic arm of CREW Network, is the sole foundation dedicating its resources toward building opportunities for women and girls in commercial real estate through charitable, philanthropic and education programs.  Your own CREW Denver chapter has been an active supporter of CREW Foundation through fund-raising, educational events, mentoring and other programs at the local level.  One of our key chapter priorities is supporting the national CREW Foundation Scholarship Endowment and establishing CREW Denver as a Founding Chapter in the endowment.
 
The CREW Foundation Scholarship Endowment program is for women pursuing an education that will lead to a career in the commercial real estate industry, and offers an internship in brokerage to encourage women to consider it as a career choice. In the three years since its establishment, the CREW Foundation Scholarship Endowment fund has awarded 39 scholarships totaling $390,000 in educational support to women – with a winner each year from the University of Denver! The Endowment seeks to raise $1,000,000 in funds by 2012.  To date, CREW Denver has raised over $11,000 towards its goal of $20,000 in contributions toward our scholarship endowment fund pledge.
 
As members of CREW Denver, our mission is to increase the power and influence of women in commercial real estate, and to give our members the opportunities and resources to be the most successful professionals possible within the commercial real estate industry.  Let’s help pave the path for future members of CREW Denver as well – please consider a donation to the CREW Foundation Scholarship Endowment through the CREW Denver chapter directly or with attendance at our next event!
